NHS Health Check

What is an NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your overall health. It’s designed to spot early signs of:

  • Heart disease

  • Stroke

  • Kidney disease

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Dementia

It usually takes about 20–30 minutes and is offered every 5 years to adults aged 40–74 who do not already have one of these conditions.

Why the NHS Health Check is Important

The check can help you understand your risk of developing serious conditions and give you personalised advice on how to reduce it. Making small changes now can help you stay healthier for longer.

Who can have an NHS Health Check?

You will be invited for an NHS Health Check if you are:

  • Aged 40 to 74

  • Do not already have heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease, or high blood pressure

Booking an NHS Health Check

If you are eligible, you may receive an invitation from the practice. You can also contact us to ask if you are due for a check.

What happens at the appointment?

During the check, we will:

  • Ask you some simple health and lifestyle questions

  • Record your height, weight, blood pressure and pulse

  • Arrange a blood test to check your cholesterol and blood sugar (this may be done in the practice or at a local clinic)

  • Talk through your results and give advice on keeping healthy

Booking your blood test
Sometimes we may ask you to book your blood test at a local clinic instead of at the practice. You can book online or by phone:

Appointments are available at the Old Fire Station (Heanor) as usual through this service.
